UPVC doorwon't lock?

It's almost always the multipoint gearbox inside the door — the part that fails first as a UPVC ages. We carry the common gearboxes, cylinders, handles and hinges on the van and fix it in 90% of cases without a second visit. The door stays, only the mechanism is replaced.

What's actually broken

It's the gearbox — not the door.

Modern UPVC doors lock by lifting the handle, which engages a long metal strip running the full length of the door edge — the multipoint mechanism. Inside it sits a small gearbox that translates the handle motion into bolt-throwing motion. It's the gearbox that fails first, almost without exception.

Symptoms: the handle gets stiffer over months, then suddenly won't lift to lock; or it lifts but the door won't latch shut; or the key turns but doesn't throw the bolts. None of these mean you need a new door. They mean you need a new gearbox, which costs a fraction of a door, and we can fit one in 30–60 minutes on a single visit.

UPVC repair is one of seven services on our home & property hub — alongside lock changes, digital locks, master-key systems and home security checks.

Brands and models we carry

The common ones on the van: GU Ferco, Yale, Avocet, Maco, Fuhr, Mila, Roto, Winkhaus, ERA, Avantis, plus the standard 35mm and 45mm backset cylinder cases. If we don't have your exact part on the van, we'll source it the same day from a local supplier and book the fit for that afternoon or first thing the next morning.

While we're there

We upgrade the cylinder to a 3-star Kitemark anti-snap as standard (the snap-resistant kind that breaks at a sacrificial point rather than letting a burglar pull the cylinder out). It's the cheapest meaningful security upgrade you can make to a UPVC door. We'll quote the upgrade with the gearbox repair. If you've already been broken into, see our insurance-approved burglar repair service — same-day, with the paperwork your insurer needs.

How it works

Three steps. Same visit.

1 · You ring us

Tell us what the door is doing (won't lock, handle won't lift, key turns but no bolts move, etc.) and your postcode. We confirm the part on the van and give you a fixed price.

2 · We arrive in 30 minutes

30-minute target across WF1–WF17, one hour to Huddersfield and Barnsley. We diagnose in front of you so you can see what's wrong.

3 · Mechanism replaced, anti-snap fitted

The old gearbox out, the new one in, a 3-star Kitemark anti-snap cylinder fitted while we're there. Test under load — 5–6 lift cycles, key both sides. Done in 30–60 minutes for the standard repair.

Common questions

Most-asked, answered straight.

How much does UPVC lock repair cost?
Depends on the brand of mechanism and whether you want the anti-snap cylinder upgrade at the same time. Ring with the make of mechanism if you know it (sometimes printed on the strip when you open the door) — we'll quote you a fixed price on the phone.
Can you fix it same-visit?
In 90% of cases yes. We carry the common gearboxes (GU Ferco, Yale, Avocet, Maco, Fuhr, Mila, Roto, Winkhaus, ERA, Avantis) on the van. For an unusual part we source same-day from a local supplier and book the fit for that afternoon.
Do I need a new door?
Almost certainly not. The door's fine; the mechanism inside it is the part that fails. Replacing the mechanism costs a fraction of replacing the door.
Is anti-snap really worth it?
Yes. Lock-snapping is the most common UPVC break-in method — burglars grab the protruding cylinder with mole grips and snap it. A 3-star Kitemark anti-snap cylinder has a sacrificial section that breaks first, leaving the rest of the lock intact and secure. We fit them as standard.
Will it look the same after?
Yes. The repair is internal to the door — the handle, faceplate and visible hardware are reused (unless they're damaged). New parts only on the inside.
Do you do this in Huddersfield and Barnsley too?
Yes. One-hour target across HD and S70–S75 postcodes. Same fixed-price-on-the-phone rule.
