Modern UPVC doors lock by lifting the handle, which engages a long metal strip running the full length of the door edge — the multipoint mechanism. Inside it sits a small gearbox that translates the handle motion into bolt-throwing motion. It's the gearbox that fails first, almost without exception.
Symptoms: the handle gets stiffer over months, then suddenly won't lift to lock; or it lifts but the door won't latch shut; or the key turns but doesn't throw the bolts. None of these mean you need a new door. They mean you need a new gearbox, which costs a fraction of a door, and we can fit one in 30–60 minutes on a single visit.
UPVC repair is one of seven services on our home & property hub — alongside lock changes, digital locks, master-key systems and home security checks.
Brands and models we carry
The common ones on the van: GU Ferco, Yale, Avocet, Maco, Fuhr, Mila, Roto, Winkhaus, ERA, Avantis, plus the standard 35mm and 45mm backset cylinder cases. If we don't have your exact part on the van, we'll source it the same day from a local supplier and book the fit for that afternoon or first thing the next morning.
While we're there
We upgrade the cylinder to a 3-star Kitemark anti-snap as standard (the snap-resistant kind that breaks at a sacrificial point rather than letting a burglar pull the cylinder out). It's the cheapest meaningful security upgrade you can make to a UPVC door. We'll quote the upgrade with the gearbox repair. If you've already been broken into, see our insurance-approved burglar repair service — same-day, with the paperwork your insurer needs.
